About This Coffee

Blackberry Hug is a natural Heirloom Ethiopian espresso from the Shantawene village of Bensa, in Sidama — one of Ethiopia's most celebrated natural coffee regions. It arrives through Daye Bensa, one of the most active and respected exporters working in the Bensa area, and is built around deep fruit, creamy texture, and a distinctive winey complexity.

Bensa sits in the southern Ethiopian highlands in an area known for the density of its Heirloom coffee varieties and the richness of its natural fermentation potential. The Gafisse washing station, which serves the Shantawene village farming community, sources its cherries from smallholder producers across the surrounding area at altitudes between 1990 and 2190 metres. Daye Bensa has worked extensively in this region to develop consistent, high-quality natural processing protocols with its partner stations, making Bensa naturals one of the most reliable and sought-after categories in East African specialty coffee.

Natural processing means the cherries dry whole, with the fruit layer intact, over several weeks on raised drying beds. At the altitudes Bensa sits at, this drying process is slow and gentle — ideal for developing the rich, integrated fruit character the region is known for. The winey quality in Bensa naturals comes from the sugars in the cherry fermenting slowly as the coffee dries, building complex berry and stone fruit esters without the sharp edge you get from faster fermentation.

In the cup: blackberry, cranberry juice, and stewed pear, with a gentle sugarcane sweetness lingering on the finish. Creamy, complex, fruit-driven.

Freshly roasted by DAK Coffee Roasters and imported to the UK by ROAST EDIT Co.
