DAK – Casa Tropical 250g | Colombia
About This Coffee
Casa Tropical is DAK Coffee Roasters' most experimental espresso blend — a mega-blend from Finca Los Nogales in Colombia, produced by Oscar Hernandez using his signature high-intervention experimental washed process. The name captures the cup well: tropical, funky, energetic, and a little unpredictable in the best possible way.
Finca Los Nogales is a multi-variety farm, and Casa Tropical brings together three of its key varieties — Typica, Caturra, and Cenicafé — into a single blend. Oscar Hernandez has built a reputation in Colombian specialty coffee for pushing washed processing well beyond its conventional limits. His high-intervention approach involves extended fermentation periods, elevated temperatures, and precise manipulation of the fermentation environment, pushing these washed coffees into genuinely experimental territory. The result is that Casa Tropical tastes unlike a standard washed Colombian despite technically being one.
DAK note that because this is a mega-blend built from multiple varieties and fermentation batches, there can be genuine variation between bags — which is part of its character rather than a flaw. What stays consistent is the overall direction: tropical fruit, berry notes, and an occasional lemongrass quality that gives the cup a distinctive, herb-forward finish.
At 1750 metres, the farm sits at the lower end of high-altitude Colombian terroir, but the processing more than compensates, delivering an espresso with aromatic complexity that punches well above its weight.
