DAK – Juice Box 250g | Colombia
About This Coffee
Juice Box is a washed Chiroso from the Urrao region of Antioquia, Colombia — a coffee that drinks closer to a washed Ethiopian than to most Colombian lots, with a bright, juice-like profile that earns it a regular place in the DAK lineup. It was previously called Honeymoon, and was renamed once Honey Burst joined the range to avoid confusion on the packing floor.
Chiroso is a variety grown mainly in Antioquia that has only been on the specialty coffee radar for a few years. Genetically it traces back to an Ethiopian landrace — which explains why it produces such vivid, Ethiopian-style acidity despite being grown on Colombian terraces. Farms in the Urrao region sit at around 2000 metres and benefit from the area's distinct altitude and microclimate.
Las Perlitas is the processing station behind this lot, and the coffee is processed in cochadas — every four to seven days, a new picking is depulped onto the previous days' accumulated coffee, homogenised, and then washed together on the final day before drying. Most of the lot ferments in water throughout, keeping the profile clean and free of the excess funk other methods can introduce. The result is a washed coffee with exceptional fruit clarity.
In the cup: blood orange, rhubarb, and honey. Bright, concentrated, and juicy — exactly what the name promises.
